Update Surface from Windows 8.1 Preview

If you’ve been using the Preview version of Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1, you can now update to the final version. This update is free for all Surface users.

After you update your Surface, you’ll need to reinstall your apps. Your personal files will remain untouched.

You must update before January 2014 when the license for the preview will expire.

How do I know if I’m using a preview version?

  • If you are using a Surface RT or Surface Pro:
  • Step 1: From Start, tap or click the Desktop tile.
Step 2: Close or move any windows that cover the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 3: If you see the version of Windows you are using and the words Evaluation copy in the lower right corner, it’s time to update.
  • If you are using a Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2, you are already running Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1, respectively.

Things to do before you update

Before you update to Windows 8.1:

  • First, install all available updates. Here's how:
  • Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.)
Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, then tap or click Update and recovery.
Step 3: Tap or click Check now.
Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details.
Step 5: Tap or click to select the updates you want to install, and then tap or click Install.
You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.
  • Next, make a note of any apps that you got from the web or loaded from disk. Make sure you have your registration information for these apps. If you installed from a disk, have that disk handy.

Apps that you got from the Windows Store are associated with your Microsoft account and ready to be installed. You only need to make these notes on apps you got elsewhere.

How to update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8. 1

You can download the update for free from the Windows Store. Here's how:

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
Doing this first will allow you to see the progress of the installation once it starts.
Step 2: After opening the Store, return to this page.
Step 3: Download Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store.
(You can also enter ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade into the address bar of your browser to reach the download page.)
If you installed Windows 8.1 Preview by booting from ISO media, you can update to the final version of Windows 8.1 Pro using the Windows Store, but your system won't activate until you buy a Windows 8.1 license and product key. For more info, see You can now install Windows 8.1.
