How to get service for Surface

If your Surface product needs service, you can request service online. Here’s how the service process works.


Register your Surface product (if you haven't already)

Go to microsoft.com/surface/support/register to register your Surface.

To register, you’ll need:

Troubleshoot the problem

Before you send your Surface product in for service, you can check out Surface troubleshooting articles on this site.

If the problem isn’t solved with troubleshooting, contact us. If the problem isn’t solved, send your product in for service.

Open a request to send your Surface product in for service

We make getting service for Surface products simple:

  • Go to Get my Surface fixed, sign in with your Microsoft account, and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • During the process, we’ll let you know if your product is under warranty.
  • If payment is required for the service, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and PayPal are accepted.

Business customers:

  • Contact Surface Support for Business.
  • To ensure the best experience, customers who don’t have a Microsoft Support contract or, MSDN or TechNet subscription should submit a service request by phone.

Send us the product

After you’ve opened your service request, we’ll send you an email with specific shipping instructions.

Prepare your Surface

Here's what you need to do to prepare your Surface for service:

Step 1:  Back up your data and sync your settings.
The Surface that we send you will not include your personal data or settings. For more info, see How to prepare your Surface for service.
Step 2:  Remove all accessories

Put only Surface in the shipping box. Do not include any accessories with your Surface, such as:

  • Typing Covers
  • Pen
  • USB device
  • Memory card from the microSD card reader
  • Power supply
  • Adapters and other video cables
  • SIM card

You can check the status of your service request at any time.

What to do after service

When you get a Surface from our service center, follow the steps on this page Set up your Surface after service.

Accessories, such as Typing Covers, the power supply, and the Surface adapters will be ready to use as soon as you connect them.
