The Internet Explorer 8 Add-On WEB-Challenge calls for students to come up with innovative ideas for web slices and accelerators that break new ground in the presentation of online information.
It’s worth taking part: once the competition has closed Microsoft Schweiz GmbH will award a main prize – a travel voucher from ebookers worth CHF 3,000.00, enough for a trip to Hawaii, for example - to the best entry from all those submitted from 14 September to 31 January 2010.
All you have to do is 1. Design add-ons, 2. Submit your entries. And then of course keep your fingers crossed!
1. Getting started
Generating Web Slices or Accelerators for Internet Explorer 8 is dead easy:a few lines of XML, an appropriate layout – and you’re done. What is much more important is having a good idea as your basis: what does the web world need beyond those familiar standard helpers for news, weather, mail, markets, shopping or information services?
Here you can give your creativity free rein. Anything goes, ranging from services for small club websites through to innovative solutions for top applications on the World Wide Web. You can obtain initial ideas for implementation from the „Internet Explorer 8 Add-on-Gallery“, which already features a range of interesting solutions.
To ensure that you get answers to all your implementation questions, we have compiled a whole package of helpful support materials and addresses – information from Microsoft and the Community, which will be available to help you at any time. You can obtain more information from the “Ressourcen” section.
2. Submission
You can submit your competition entry quite simply via the Upload Function on this website. The deadline for submission is 31 January 2010.
The best valid entry submitted by the deadline (31 January 2010) will win the main prize – a travel voucher from ebookers worth CHF 3,000.00, enough for a trip to Hawaii, for example. Each entry submitted that meets the criteria will also receive a pack of 2 x 4GB USB sticks. For the purposes of the competition, solutions can be submitted in two categories:
Under the rules of the contest only those entries which consist of an appropriate XML code snippet and a short text description of the solution generated, will be considered. The code snippets must comply with the underlying guidelines for the creation of Web Slices or Accelerators. You can obtain detailed recommendations about info material from the “Resources” section of this website.
Applications submitted must also:
tackle a specific, self-defined assignment, which is described in bullet point form in the attached description of the solution.
illustrate implementation innovations or present such innovations in a different way compared to solutions that already exist for Internet Explorer 8 or that have been published in the “Internet Explorer 8 Add-on Gallery” on the submission date.
For participation purposes, competitors may choose any number of add-ons, provided individual entries each tackle different, separate assignments.
To be eligible to win the main prize, the add-ons submitted will be judged in accordance with the following evaluation criteria:Technology: the application should exploit web slice or IE8 accelerator possibilities as fully as possible (weighting 30%)
User experience: logical, simple manageability of the application (weighting 30%)
Innovation: it must involve an innovative, new kind of solution (weighting 40%)
