Dear readers,

The time has come: Office 365 is available as a public beta version in 17 languages and 38 countries, including Switzerland.
Office 365 is due in the first half of 2011 and is the successor to Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS). It is a comprehensive software-as-a-service (SaaS) offer targeted at small and large companies and contains the following services: Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Lync Online. One completely new feature is the option of procuring Office Professional Plus as part of the package and thus paying for it on a monthly basis.

What's notable is that Office 365 is not a self-contained SaaS offering; you can integrate your applications in Office 365 and also run your own solutions within SharePoint Online. One example of this integration is creating appointments from the separate application in Exchange Online. It's best to do this via Microsoft Exchange Web Services (EWS) Managed API. Another completely new feature is that you can develop “sandboxed solutions” yourself for SharePoint Online and make these available to your users. These solutions are typically in the form of your own web parts, lists or even workflows.

If you would like to find out more about Office 365, register here for the public beta version and use the following links:
