Microsoft System Center solutions play a central role in Microsoft's long term vision for helping IT organizations benefit from self-managing, user-centric, dynamic systems. System Center solutions capture and aggregate knowledge about the infrastructure, policies, processes, and best practices so that IT pros can optimize IT structures to reduce costs, improve application availability, and enhance service delivery.

These integrated and automated management solutions enable IT organizations to be more productive service providers to their businesses. Aiming to enable self-managing, dynamic systems, System Center solutions close the gap between development, operations, and IT—connecting people, processes, and tools—by evaluating dependencies and optimizing business process performance from deep inside the operating system, applications, and composite services and workflows in both physical and virtual environments.

System Center solutions span the desktop to the datacenter. System Center products are generally licensed in the context of those same two categories; with separate licenses available for client and server management. System Center products are available on a standalone basis. However, the simple, cost effective, and flexible way to license System Center solutions for client and server management is through our suite offerings.

  • Client management capabilities can be licensed individually (the Configuration Manager Client Management License for example), as well as through the Core CAL or Enterprise CAL suites giving you access to a range of client management capabilities.

  • Server management capabilities can be licensed individually (the Operations Manager Enterprise Server Management License for example) for each Operating System Environment managed, as well as through the Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE) or Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD) suite offerings. Server management suites combine the power of multiple server management capabilities with virtualization use rights (e.g. the SMSD provides for the management of an unlimited number of virtual machines on a licensed device) that enable you to adopt server virtualization.
