Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (Operations Manager) 2007 requires a Server License for each management server and a Management License (ML) for each managed Operating System Environment (OSE). MLs are offered in Enterprise and Standard Editions for management of servers, and in a Client Edition for management of clients and other devices not running server operating systems. An Enterprise Server ML is required for full application and server management, and a Standard Server ML can be used for server operating system and basic workload management.
Introduction of the Standard Server ML
A Standard Server ML was introduced with the previous version of Operations Manager, and is limited to servers where only basic server workloads or the operating system and system hardware are being managed.
*Basic Server Workloads
Basic Operating System Utilities. System Resource Manager, Password Change Notification, Baseline Security Analyzer, Reliability and Availability Services.
Storage/File/Print Servers. Print or file-sharing servers that run file transfer protocol (FTP), network file system (NFS), and Windows file sharing (SMB or CIFS).
Networking Servers. DHCP, DNS, WINS, or Radius servers. DHCP servers dynamically assign TCP/IP addresses and communication options, such as default gateways, subnet masks and routing tables. Naming servers, such as DNS and WINS, map TCP/IP addresses to friendly intranet- or Internet-published names. RADIUS authenticates and monitors machine credentials to control the client network access privileges.
Managing any server workloads or applications other than those listed above as part of basic server workloads requires an Enterprise Server Management License.
