Beta of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Is Available

Microsoft has announced the formal name and beta availability of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008—a member of the System Center suite of server management products. The announcements came April 29 at the Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas, which showcased the beta of the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (VMM) managing both Hyper-V and VMware virtual infrastructure. Additional functionality new to this version of VMM includes Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO), which dynamically tunes virtual infrastructure, simplified virtual host cluster support, and other improvements and enhancements.

VMM 2008 beta is available from the Microsoft Connect Download site. To download the beta, visit http://Connect.Microsoft.com and follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in with Live ID or click Register for Connect today to get a free Live ID.

  2. Once in Connect, select Connection Directory from the menu at the top of the page.

  3. Within the Connection Directory, select Server from the Categories menu.

  4. Go to System Center Virtual Machine Manager and click on Apply Now.

  5. The SCVMM 2008 Public Beta Nomination Survey will open in a new window. Fill out the nomination form and click submit.

  6. This should bring you to the SCVMM 2008 beta home page with downloads and additional information.

  7. Review information and follow the link on the SCVMM 2008 Beta Program home page to download the beta bits.
