Welcome to TechNet Flash,

As I write this, the Microsoft TechEd Europe 2005 conference is underway in Amsterdam. Those who can’t attend will be able to receive highlights and key announcements from the European conference as an RSS feed.

July also marks the release of a tool for which many of you will undoubtedly find good uses. The new Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP (Beta) can help keep shared computers in schools, libraries, and other publicly accessible locations more secure and reliable.
You can use the set of software tools in the toolkit to prevent command-line commands from being executed; restrict access to files, settings, or Start menu items; and clear unapproved changes to the disk with each restart. And, yes, this toolkit works with Windows XP Home Edition. You can download the free beta now, and you don’t need Active Directory or any server infrastructure to use it. If you’ve had a “What the...?!” moment when using shared computers, check out this public beta release.

Enjoy the issue.

Security for IT Pros
The Microsoft Identity and Access Management Series now contains a paper on password management. User passwords can be easily compromised through social engineering, through increasingly frequent worms and viruses, and through users continuing to simply write their network credentials on scraps of paper. Poor password management can have a substantial impact on an organization’s security, financial health, public credibility, and regulatory compliance.

The paper uses a fictitious organization to illustrate the process of determining password policy requirements, carrying out step-by-step procedures to enforce a strong password policy, and then managing the organization’s passwords through both an intranet and an extranet. Finally, the paper discusses how to validate the password management implementation and perform common operation tasks to maintain it.
