Welcome to TechNet Flash,
I was recently discussing instant messaging (IM)
applications with a few colleagues. Nearly all
who had tried the recently released Microsoft
Office Communicator 2005 noted that it is an IM
application that -- finally! -- integrates
smoothly into our existing workflow and
communications infrastructure. After using
Communicator 2005 for the past few months, I
must admit that I’ve gone from being an IM
avoider to being “IM friendly.” I attribute this
remarkable turnaround to the communications
client’s low “annoyance factor.”
|
Unlike most personal IM clients, Communicator 2005
supports groups (My team). What I like best is that it
automatically syncs my presence to my Outlook schedule
to set my status to Online, Away (when I’m in a
meeting), or Out of Office.
Communicator 2005 also integrates seamlessly with our
phones, providing a telephony system that surpasses
anything I’ve experienced, with built-in call
forwarding, audio conferencing, Microsoft Office Live
Meeting support, and even a “people finder” search box
that links into our Active Directory. When my phone
rings, it tells me who’s on the line, and I can see more
details about them or schedule a conference with a
single click. I find myself increasingly using it to see
who is in a meeting or is available to take a call -- it
integrates very elegantly with our Outlook calendars.
Through Microsoft Office Live Communications Server
2005, Communicator 2005 delivers support for voice video
conversations, application sharing, e-mail and file
transfers, plus the usual IM functions -- including deep
support for Active Directory and Exchange Server 2003
(both of which are required as a core back end, running
on Windows Server 2003). It’s worth a look, if you’re
looking for an elegant yet full-featured solution that
has the annoyance factor beat.
You’ll find links to more information about Communicator
2005 in the Featured Topic section.
Enjoy the issue.

There’s a new script that can help identify a

mode, but you can get a script in the TechNet
