Welcome and thanks for coming to our chat today on Content Management Server. This chat will last about an hour.
Moderator: Jana (Microsoft)
We are a bit shy on hosts today, but we are lucky to have with us Henry Winkler. Welcome Henry!
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Hi, my name is Henry, I am part of the Microsoft Services organization focusing on E-Business application development projects.
Moderator: Jana (Microsoft)
Henry, how long have you been working with CMS?
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
About 3+ years - since the NCompass Resolution days

Q: Generally we keep the display logic to the HTML and the code behind houses the main logic. Each control uses the runat server feature, is there a point where the runats affect performance?
A: As MichaelGiagnocavo pointed out, they will always have more of a perf hit than a literal or flat HTML....
Tradeoff, of course is development flexibility and structure. Utilization of the various caching options is usually the best way to mitigate this impact.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: How is CMS implemented (.NET assemblies or ISAPI filter or..?) Q:
A: CMS is primarily implemented as several ISAPI filters, COM objects, and .NET wrappers on top of COM objects. The goal of CMS2002 was to expose as much of CMS as possible to .NET, not a rewrite of the CMS object in .Net from the ground up.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: How to Share Point Portal Services and CMS combine? Is it automatic, or must we write code to link them?
A: There is a whitepaper on this on MSDN - don't have URL at my fingertips, but it provides very detailed instructions and code samples. Bottom line, it is code you need to write.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Is CMS committed to the .NET Framework (like newer versions will work with frameworks v1.1+ and beyond?
A: Yes. CMS SP1 is due out shortly, and will provide support for .Net1.1 and Windows 2003 Server
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Is CMS a product that needs a team of devs to implement? It wouldn't be fore one webmaster making his companies site?
A: Short answer is that is is a development effort. How big of team is based on several factors, complexity of rqmts, scalability, dev team skills etc.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Can we use Managed C++ with CMS?
A: Don't know definitively, but I don't see why not. Sorry - just a C# guy here. ;-)
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Does Microsoft.com use CMS?
A: Yes - our primary internal portal for the operations group was just recently upgraded to CMS2002. And there are many others at the dept level.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: ETA of CMS2002 SP1?
A: Roughly the next 3-4 weeks - give or take a week ( I would need to verify what the official word is, though)
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: When an Editor modifies an approved page, with an approved posting, shouldn't that posting's status be reset so that it can't be published without a Moderator's approval ??
A: I believe the rationale is that the Moderator's job is to determine if the "page" is appropriate in that particular area of the site, etc. It is my understanding that once that has been approved, the Editor owns the content and can make decisions accordingly
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Why isn't the CMS Authoring tool code available for us to make changes? For example, the Resource Manager - I'd like to keep the window open but source is not available.
A: Unfortunately, I can't really provide an answer to the thought process behind what is exposed and what isn't. I would encourage you to check back in next month's chat when we should have our usual contingent of hosts.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Is there a way to set the channels so that a moderator is not needed to review/approve a page since the editor has already approved the pages?
A: By default, if there is no Moderator, the posting will be published when the Editor approves.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: re: SPS & CMS combining (Project Jupiter?) -- any timelines around that?
A: Sorry, I am not the guy to discuss that one.
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: What if we don't want the moderator to have to approve anything? Where do we change that?
A: As I mentioned earlier - and maybe I am incorrect here - If you don't have any moderators defined, then when the Editor approves the page, even first time through, it should get published. Unfortunately, I can't chat and try to recreate to be sure :-( .
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Sample code would be a start
A: make sure you check out the CMS section on gotdotnet - good community stuff forming there
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: Is it possible to enable multiple users to edit a page since a page is locked by the owner. Can't update the page if the owner's not available.
A: AKAIK - there is no way to do this. There are scripts to use the PAPI to reset the status. Just FYI - here is the GotDotNet link http://www.gotdotnet.com/community/usersamples/Default.aspx?ProductDropDownList=Content+Management+Server
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
Q: CMS and SharePoint portal integration. Can I get an update?
A: Content Integration Pack v2 is available for download. Look for a new version to integrate with SPS2003 around the release time for that product.
Moderator: Jana (Microsoft)
Thanks everyone for joining us today. The time has come to say goodbye :( Thanks Henry for joining us!
Host: Henry (Microsoft)
