Event Review: UNIX Interoperability in Windows Server 2003 R2 (Session ITPROADD-52)
Welcome to the material supporting page for this session. The materials on this page have been selected as the best matches to the content covered in the live event session.
Session Outline
This session discusses UNIX interoperability features in Windows Server 2003 R2. There are many UNIX interoperability features that now come in the box with Windows Server. They still require installation using Windows Components, but they do not require separate download. There are additional UNIX interoperability features that provide more functionality that can be downloaded separately.
Session Agenda
- UNIX interoperability features in Windows Server 2003 R2
- How Windows Services for UNIX compares
- What is in it for you

| Demo: Installing UNIX Interoperability Features in Windows Server 2003 R2
This demo walks through the installation of all UNIX interoperability components found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, including the Subsystem for UNIX-Based Applications (SUA) SDK, which was downloaded in advance. Download |
| Demo: Server for NIS
Server for NIS allows a Windows Server to act as a NIS master server. This enables some compelling interoperability scenarios. Download |
| Demo: NFS Server
In this demonstration, we will look at the NFS Server component of the UNIX Interoperability features in Windows Server 2003 R2. We will provide access to our Windows share through NFS, so the UNIX workstations will be able to use Windows servers to store their files. Download |
| Demo: Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 provides a full range of cross-platform services that help us integrate our UNIX and Windows environments. It includes the Subsystem for UNIX Applications, which allows us to run native UNIX applications on a Windows platform. In this demonstration we will look at the SUA Korn shell and the single rooted file system. Through these demonstrations we will see that SUA looks and behaves just like common UNIX environments. | Demo: Porting Scripts
This demonstration walks through scripts used in the UNIX platform which are then ported and used in the same fashion in SUA in the Windows platform. Download |
