Getting Started Guide

Imaging Tools

Published: August 27, 2005

The computer imaging process is based on creating computer image files by using the System Preparation Tool (Sysprep), and then deploying them. For more information on disk imaging, see the Computer Imaging System Feature Team Guide. This solution was built and tested for Sysprep-based images using the following imaging tools:

PowerQuest PQIDeploy 5.5

Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition 8.0

Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack

Note   You might be able to integrate other imaging tools from other vendors that best suit your needs. If you are planning to use Remote Installation Service (RIS) unattended or Remote Installation Preparation (RIPrep)-based images solely and are not creating backup images of your current computers, no Sysprep-based disk imaging software is required. The guidance in this solution does not fully cover RIPrep-based images. For complete guidance on using RIS, see “Designing RIS Installations” in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/
