Appendix N: Reserving Space for Future Migrations

Published: August 27, 2005

There may be some situations where it would be useful to reserve available disk space for future migrations. You can preallocate the disk space today and then release the disk space immediately prior to a migration in the future (or as a part of the actual migration process itself).

You can reserve disk space for future migrations by creating a reserve file on the same disk volume as the system volume. A reserve file is simply a large file that takes up available disk space. In the event that you need additional available disk space in the future for migrations, you can delete the reserve file to provide additional disk space.

To create a reserve file on a client computer:

1.

Log on to a client computer running Windows XP Professional.

2.

Connect to the remote administrative share for the disk volume on the system volume (for example C$).

3.

Create the reserve file on the same disk volume as the system volume by using the following command from any Windows XP Professional client:

Note This command is shown on multiple lines for better readability; enter them as a single line.

fsutil file createnew
reserve_file_name reserve_file_size

4.

Ensure that the reserve file name you specify resides on the same disk volume as the system volume.

5.

Grant only Administrators Full Control on the reserve file.

6.

Set the System attributes on the file.
