Getting Started Guide

Introduction

Published: August 27, 2005

The Microsoft® Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) delivers end-to-end guidance for efficient planning, building, testing, and deploying Microsoft Windows® XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. This accelerator helps information technology (IT) professionals realize a quick return on investment while also setting new standards for reliability, performance, security, and ease of use.

This accelerator provides proven tools and practices that enable IT professionals to:

Create a software and hardware inventory to assist in deployment planning.

Test applications for compatibility with Windows XP Professional, and mitigate the compatibility issues discovered during the process.

Set up an initial lab environment with deployment and imaging servers.

Customize and package core and supplemental applications.

Automate desktop image creation and deployment.

Ensure that the desktop is hardened to improve security within the environment.

Manage processes and technologies to produce a comprehensive and integrated deployment.

The accelerator brings together time-honored and well-proven practices, as well as the following Microsoft technologies:

Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) CDs as boot disks.

Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) for capturing and restoring user data.

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 3.0 (ACT) for gathering application inventory as well as testing and remediation of application-compatibility issues.

Office Professional Edition 2003 as cornerstone enterprise applications.

Office 2003 Editions Resource Kit for creating the custom-deployment packages.

Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition as the deployed operating systems.

The BDD solution contains guidance, sample templates, and technology files (such as scripts and configuration files). It also requires software that will be downloaded from the Internet as well as media that you will need to provide. The solution’s documentation discusses these topics in detail. The focus of this solution is on computer deployment rather than the leveraged integration that can be achieved on the platform by combining computers and domains. This solution supports deploying computers in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, or Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 domain.

Note   For the latest information, see C:\Program Files\BDD Enterprise 2.5\BDD Enterprise Edition Readme.

Note   The Solution Accelerator for BDD combines abstract concepts that are sometimes difficult to follow without citing specific examples. To make these concepts easier to understand, this solution references a desktop-deployment project at a fictional company called Woodgrove Bank. For more information about Woodgrove Bank and its infrastructure, see the document Woodgrove Enterprise IT Archetype. This solution also provides sample job aids for Woodgrove Bank. Each job aid based on the Woodgrove Bank scenario contains Woodgrove in the file name. The content in each planning template is specific to Woodgrove Bank, and you should replace it with information specific to your organization.
