Overview

The Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) is part of a family of Microsoft solution offerings aimed at providing reusable components and repeatable processes to achieve timely and cost-effective information technology (IT) solutions.

The BDD solution accelerator is designed to help a team deploy Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Office 2003, and other applications to computers across an organization quickly and reliably. It addresses both Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

To achieve this goal, this accelerated solution provides fully developed processes for:

Workstation imaging

Software and hardware inventory

Application compatibility evaluation and remediation

Application packaging and scripting

Network inventory and analysis

Workstation deployment, including data migration

Project management throughout the project’s life cycle

This solution accelerator is based upon Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) project principles and Microsoft Worldwide Services real-world best practices. It provides guidance and documentation for use in planning, developing, and customizing an organization’s deployment.

Benefits of Business Desktop Deployment

The BDD solution accelerator facilitates quick deployment of new Microsoft desktop technologies and enables IT professionals to realize quick return on investment, at the same time setting new standards for reliability, performance, security, and ease of use.

It describes how to use new lightweight tools from Microsoft that can query Windows-based desktops and create a central database repository of all applications installed on the inventoried computers. The reports generated are used to prioritize application compatibility testing, characterize application installations on the production network, and provide input to desktop life cycle planning and license management.

It provides guidance for testing applications and leveraging the compatibility features of Windows XP Professional, enabling many noncertified applications to run successfully on the Windows XP platform.

Documentation Overview

The BDD solution accelerator has four components: the Plan, Build, and Deploy Guide, the technical feature team guides, the template documents, and the solution scripts. A team can use these interdependent components in whole or in part depending on the role of a particular team member in the project.

A feature team is a cross-organizational team of responsible owners organized to solve a defined problem. The BDD solution includes the following feature teams:

Application Compatibility

Computer Imaging System

Deployment

Infrastructure Remediation

Core Applications (including Office 2003)

Operations Readiness

Security

Supplemental Applications

Test

User State Migration

The feature team guides provide information on specific technical areas. Separating the technical content from the planning and management content enables readers to focus on the types of documents that are most pertinent to their roles on the team.
