Converting an Existing FTP Site to Isolate Users Mode (IIS 6.0)

You can convert an existing FTP site to Isolate users mode after you upgrade to Windows Server 2003.

To convert an existing FTP site to Isolate users mode

1.

In IIS Manager, click the local computer, double-click the FTP Sites folder, right-click the FTP site that you want to convert, and then click Stop.

  Important

You must stop the FTP service because you need to move user directories to new locations.

If users log on to the FTP site with local machine accounts or if you allow anonymous access to the FTP site, complete the following steps:

1.

Under the FTP home directory, create a subdirectory named LocalUser.

2.

If you allow anonymous access to the site, create a subdirectory under LocalUser named Public. This will be the home directory for anonymous users.

3.

Move the content for the anonymous user from the existing location to the new Public subdirectory.

4.

For each FTP user with a local computer account, create a subdirectory under LocalUser with the user account name. Move content from existing user directories to these new directories.

If domain users access the site, complete all of the following steps:

1.

Create a subdirectory under the FTP home directory for each domain for which users are accessing the site. The subdirectories must be named by the domain names.

2.

For each user, create a subdirectory under the corresponding domain-named subdirectory, and move existing content into the new subdirectories.

4.

To finish the conversion, do one of the following:

•

Use the FTP Site Creation Wizard to create a new FTP site, and point the site path to the FTP home directory.

•

Edit the metabase, set the UserIsolationMode Metabase Property to 1 for the site and the path in the corresponding /Rootvirtual root section to the new site home directory.

  Important

Before you edit the metabase, verify that you have a backup copy that you can restore if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, see Working with the Metabase.

5.

In IIS Manager, click the local computer, double-click the FTP Sites folder, right-click the converted FTP site, and then click Start.
