Write Disk Space Information to a Text File

Submitted By: Dave Zentrich

Language: VBScript

Description: This script connects to all the logical disks on a computer, gathers information from the DeviceID and FreeSpace properties, and then writes that information to a text file. The text file is added to nightly (with the newest results on top), so I can see a trend regarding how fast disk space is being consumed, or if any "jumps" in disk usage have occurred.

Script Code

Const FOR_READING = 1
Const FOR_WRITING = 2
Const HARD_DISK = 3

On Error Resume Next

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

Set objTextFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile _
("C:\FreeDiskSpace.txt", FOR_READING)

strContents = objTextFile.ReadAll
    objTextFile.Close

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")

Set colDisks = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_LogicalDisk Where DriveType = " & HARD_DISK & "")

Set objTextFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile _
("C:\FreeDiskSpace.txt", FOR_WRITING)

objTextFile.WriteLine("Run Date/Time: "& vbTab & NOW())

For Each objDisk in colDisks
objTextFile.WriteLine("DeviceID: "& vbTab &  objDisk.DeviceID)

objTextFile.WriteLine("Free Disk Space: " & vbTab & objDisk.FreeSpace)

Next

objTextFile.WriteLine vbCRLF & strContents

objTextFile.Close
