Winter Scripting Games: Profiles in Perfection

As part of the 2007 Winter Scripting Games the Script Center is profiling competitors who recorded a perfect score in the 2007 Scripting Games. Here, in his own words, is a little something about Gordon Yuen, who received a perfect score in the VBScript Advanced Division.

Hello from Vancouver, B.C. host city of the next Winter Olympics in 2010. I live with my beautiful wife and two little boys aged 5 and 2. As many parents can attest to, I don't have much free time to spend on scripting outside of work. But when I do it's a real eye-opener as to what scripts can get accomplished.

My older brother got me interested in computers way back when our parents bought our first computer. It was an Atari 800 with 48K of RAM and a 5.25 inch 88K single-sided single-density floppy drive. With a floppy drive I got my first exposure to DOS. For programming a BASIC cartridge was inserted.

Through school I learned BASIC, Pascal, Modula2 and C. Out of school, and when computers were still a "geek" thing, I went into Computer Sales and then to Server/Workstation installations. During this time I must admit that my mind was not thinking code 24/7. When computers morphed from "geek" to "chic" I started my job as a Systems Administrator. Soon, after doing repetitious tasks, I got the bug to try and automate most of my daily tasks. Everything just exploded from there. I've scripted unattended OS and application installations, remotely updated computers, and created a script to remove the Sasser virus when an antivirus was not yet available.

Ultimately one day we could get the computer to do what we want telepathically. Until that day I will continue to script and learn new scripting languages like Windows PowerShell.
