How to Join the Scripting Guys Group on Facebook

Facebook

So how do you join the Scripting Guys group on Facebook? Well, if you don’t already have a Facebook account then the first thing you need to do is go to Facebook.com and sign up for one. (Yes, we know. But don’t worry; it’s free, and you can choose to hide your profile so that no one can look you up.)

As soon as you have an account go ahead and log on, then look for the Facebook Search box. Once you’ve located the Search box, type in scripting guys and then press ENTER. In other words:

Facebook

Or, alternatively, try this link. If all goes well (and because this is a Web application you know that things are all-but guaranteed to go well) you should get back a search results dialog box that looks something like this:

Facebook

And yes, as a matter of fact that is Jean Ross’ high school graduation photo. She hasn’t changed a bit since then.

At this point you’re in business: just click Join Group and a dialog box similar to the following will pop up on the screen:

Facebook

Click Join and, in no time at all, you’ll be a full-fledged member of the Scripting Guys group on Facebook. Congratulations!

So what happens after you join? Well, at the moment, not a whole lot. (Although it is possible to post messages on “the Wall” and to start/join in on a discussion). That said, we do have a few plans for Facebook and the Scripting Guys group; if nothing else, there are a lot of things that we can’t do (or can’t do easily) on Microsoft.com, and Facebook seems like a decent-enough alternative. (What sorts of things? Well, video is one item that comes to mind.) We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks. And, of course, we’re always interested in suggestions from you. Drop us a line at scripter@microsoft.com (in English, if possible) or, even better, join the group and leave a message on the Wall.

We also view Facebook as a good way to get information to people, and in a timely fashion. For example, if you’re planning on participating in the 2008 Winter Scripting Games then you should join the Scripting Guys group right away; that’s because the group offers an easy way for us to keep you informed about the Games, and to issue a reminder or two before the Games begin.

Oh, and one more thing: of course you’re planning on participating in the 2008 Winter Scripting Games. We have some fun – and challenging events – planned for the 2008 Games, as well as some very cool prizes. Stay tuned! (Or join the Scripting Guys group, and we’ll stay tuned for you.)
