Introduction

Published: March 31, 2005

This guide describes how to install, configure, and test the CommVault Galaxy software, which provides backup and recovery services in Windows Server System Reference Architecture (WSSRA). As part of the Qinetix storage management suite, CommVault's Galaxy software provides a powerful set of storage management tools that help manage critical enterprise and departmental information. These tools provide the ability to store and retrieve the data for one or more computer systems.

The Galaxy system is composed of one or more CommCells, each of which consists of the following installed and configured components:

One CommServe StorageManager: The CommServe communicates with all client computers in the CommCell to initiate system backup and restore operations. Similarly, it communicates with MediaAgents when the media subsystem requires management. The CommServe is the heart of the Galaxy CommCell, connecting all components into one area network.

One or more MediaAgents: The MediaAgent component of the Galaxy CommCell conducts data between the client computer and the backup media. Each MediaAgent communicates locally to one or more storage units through a local bus adapter (for example, SCSI). The Galaxy system provides for a wide variety of storage units to which data can be backed up.

One or more Intelligent Data Agents (iDataAgent): The iDataAgents are software modules responsible for backing up and restoring data on host computer systems (clients). A CommCell can support many clients. The Galaxy system provides a variety of iDataAgents, each designed to handle a different kind of data (for example, file server data, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server data, SQL Server 2000 data). If a given server has two or more types of data, it requires two or more iDataAgent-one for each data type-to secure all the client data.

Note: For a more detailed understanding of the Galaxy software suite and architecture prescribed for this environment, please refer to the Backup and Recovery Services Planning Guide.

Knowledge Prerequisites

Successful completion of the steps detailed in this guide requires a certain level of technical knowledge. The guidance in this guide is written assuming the following level of experience and knowledge:

Two years of Windows NT 4.0 experience in a networked environment

Three months of experience with the type of service or technology being built

Access (including Web site links) to existing manuals/guides for the specific service, technology or product being built or operated.

Background knowledge of CommVault Galaxy software

For more detailed information to related documentation, refer to the Galaxy product documentation and the Backup and Recovery ServicesPlanning Guide.

Service Prerequisites

The following table contains service prerequisites for implementing the backup and recovery services as described in this guide.

Prerequisite ElementPrerequisite CheckVerified

Network Devices

Ensure that the network is in place and configured as defined in the Network Devices Build Guide.

Computing Devices

Ensure that all servers are installed and powered on as defined in the Computing Devices Build Guide.

Storage Devices

Ensure that the SAN fabric and storage devices have been configured as defined in the Storage Devices Build Guide. Ensure that the SAN tape device is connected to the SAN and operating correctly.

Deployment Services

Ensure that all the servers have the operating system and base configuration completed as defined in the Deployment Services Build Guide.

Directory Service

Ensure that the appropriate domains, organizational units, and group policies have been created and are operational as defined in the Directory Service Build Guide. The DNS service configured as part of the Directory Service is required for the Backup and Recovery Service.

Firewall Services

Ensure that the interior and perimeter firewall devices have been installed, configured, and are operational as defined in the Firewall Services Build Guide.

Table 1. WSSRA Backup and Recovery Services Service Prerequisites

For more detailed prerequisites, refer to the CommVault Galaxy Pre-Installation Checklist, which is provided with the Galaxy product documentation.
