Introduction

Published: March 31, 2005

Enterprise organizations require computing devices that can support the high availability, security, scalability, and manageability needs of complex data center environments such as the Windows Server System Reference Architecture (WSSRA) Centralized Data Center (CDC) scenario. However, the needs of smaller, less complex data centers such as branch offices, departmental offices, and satellite offices must also be met.

This guide provides a detailed breakdown of the exact design choices and requirements for the provision of data center servers in the Centralized Data Center (CDC) and Satellite Branch Office (SBO) scenarios.

Who Should Read This Guide

This guide is written for systems engineers who are responsible for specifying, building, and maintaining an organization’s server hardware. The reader is expected to understand the technical details provided in this service-level guidance, and should also be able to understand the enterprise-level discussions and decisions presented.

Knowledge Prerequisites

The reader should have an experience of implementing and operating server computers in a data center environment. In addition, the reader should have some knowledge of the following technologies:

Server configurations, including processor and memory designs.

Disk configurations, including RAID, SCSI disk controllers, SCSI disk drives, and storage area networks (SAN).

PCI card configurations including bus speeds and specific cards such as host bus adapters (HBAs) and network adapters.

To get a better understanding of the design choices presented in this guide, the reader should be familiar with the design options provided in the Computing Devices Blueprint. That blueprint also provided the rationale for making certain decisions and specific server design details for the CDC and SBO scenarios.
