File Services Introduction

Published: March 31, 2005

This section includes the information necessary to deploy file services, including an initial Distributed File System (DFS) hierarchy, file servers, File Replication Service (FRS), and the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

The procedures in this guide were used to implement file services in the test lab, which simulates a real-world scenario. However, most organizations will implement file services in very different ways. The guidelines and scenarios described in this guide are intended to satisfy the architectural needs of most organizations.

Service Prerequisites

The following table lists those services that need to be in place before the file services as described in this guide can be implemented.

Prerequisite ElementPrerequisite CheckVerified

Network Devices

Ensure that the network is in place and configured as defined in the Network DevicesBuild Guide.

Computing Devices

Ensure that all file servers are installed and powered on as defined in the Computing Devices Build Guide.

Storage Devices

Ensure that the SAN fabric and storage devices have been configured as defined in the Storage Devices Build Guide.

Deployment Services

Ensure that all the file servers have the operating system and base configuration completed as defined in the Deployment Services Build Guide.

Directory Service

Ensure that the appropriate domains, organizational units, and group policies have been created and are operational as defined in the Directory Service Build Guide.

Firewall Services

Ensure that the interior and perimeter firewall devices have been installed, configured, and are operational ad defined in the Firewall Services Build Guide.

In addition, because domain administrator privileges are used to deploy, implement, and delegate administration of devices, servers, and services, the initial deployment of file services requires a user logon that is a domain administrator. Once file services are deployed, administrators for these respective services will be able to create, delete, and modify all elements of the file architecture.
