Zapfest update

The organizers of Zapfest have sent us updated information.


Dear Friend:

You are receiving this mail message because you are a member of the Friends of Calligraphy (FOC) or a friend/colleague of someone on the Zapfest committee. This message contains an update on the events happening around Zapfest. Our website, http://www.zapfest.com, will be updated soon with more specifics. Members of FOC will also be receiving this Zapfest information via "snail mail."

The calendar is set for the Zapfest events, and we look forward to seeing many "Friends" in September and October!

Talks by Hermann Zapf & Gudrun Zapf von Hesse, and Award Presentation. Sunday, September 2, 2001 2:00 p.m. San Francisco Public Library, Koret Auditorium, Lower Level. Reception following in the Hispanic-Latino Room. The Friends of Calligraphy will present the Zapfs with a "Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Calligraphy & Type Design." This beautiful award has been designed by FOC members Georgianna Greenwood and Georgia Deaver.

All lectures at 2:00 p.m.
All lectures will be held at the San Francisco Public Library, Koret Auditorium, Lower Level. September 8: Jack Stauffacher with Sumner Stone. September 15: Larry Brady. September 29: Susan Skarsgard, October 6: Sumner Stone. October 13: Cynthia Hollandsworth. October 27: Robert Bringhurst.

Concurrent Event:
"Jack Stauffacher, The Years Away"
Exhibition at the SF Center for the Book.
An exhibition of the work of Jack Stauffacher will run September 7 thru November 2. Jack is a superb San Francisco printer and typographer, a long-time friend of the Zapfs, and one of the designers for our exhibition catalogue. This exhibition will include proofs from the book "Hunt Roman, the Birth of a Type". This book was printed by Jack in 1963 to highlight Hermann Zapf¹s Hunt Roman typeface. Jack Stauffacher, Hermann Zapf, and Gudrun Zapf von Hesse will attend the opening, and there will be Hunt Roman (metal) type on the bed of the Center's Vandercook press. "Women Typographers & Fine Printers"
Exhibition at Mills College Center for the Book.
An exhibition of the work of women typographers and fine printers will run during September at the F.W. Olin Library, Mills College. This exhibition will include work by Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. She will attend the opening reception, which will feature an informal conversation between Gudrun and local women book artists, Georgianna Greenwood, Anna Wolf, and Linnea Lundquist. The catalogue for our exhibition "Calligraphic Type Design in the Digital Age, An Exhibition in Honor of the Contributions of Hermann & Gudrun Zapf," will be available in September, at a retail price of approximately $50. This book promises to be wonderful. It includes type designs and calligraphy by Hermann Zapf, Gudrun Zapf von Hesse, and the other 14 exhibitors: Alan Blackman, Erik van Blokland, Rick Cusick, Timothy Donaldson, Jean Evans, Phill Grimshaw, Cynthia Hollandsworth, Akira Kobayashi, Richard Lipton, Jacqueline Sakwa, Robert Slimbach, Viktor Solt-Bittner, Jovica Veljovic, and Julian Waters. The catalogue also includes essays on the theme of calligraphic type design by Rick Cusick, Jerry Kelly, Sumner Stone, Susie Taylor, Hermann Zapf, and Gudrun Zapf von Hesse.
