Pyrus have sent us the following statement concerning the Mac version of Composer. The Mac Composer press release got sent out early inadvertently. While Composer is finished, it's still in manufacturing and isn't ready to ship yet. It should be ready to go by the end of next week.

Last year six issues of conference newspaper Short Cuts were produced during the four days of ATypI 97. At least two members of the team that produced the publication, Stuart Bailey and Mark Barratt, will be working on an as yet unnamed ATypI 98 news-sheet, to be published in English and French.

eMediaweekly jumps the gun?

An article in Mac design mag eMediaweekly announcing the release of a Mac version of FontLab Composer seems to have jumped the gun. Although it's common knowledge that Yuri and the FontLab gang are working on a Mac version of the popular font editor, it's release was not expected for some time.

Cougar stalks HP campus

Just weeks after a wolfdog was captured near Adobe's Seattle HQ, another local type related company was placed on alert. According to King 5 News, Hewlett Packard security guards spotted a cougar stalking the company's western Washington campus.

It could only happen on the Web

A group of 'free font activists' (for lack of a better description) are organizing a boycott of a certain font foundry because it pursues people who post their fonts to Web archive sites. The effectiveness of a boycott by people who don't actually buy fonts is expected to be less than successful. Multiscript article

A technical article entitled 'Supporting Multilanguage Text Layout and Complex Scripts with Windows NT 5.0' appears in the latest issue of the Microsoft Systems Journal (vol. 13, no. 11). The article explores the relationship between Unicode, Uniscribe and OpenType. Part of the article appears online.

Batty plans for the future
