TypeCon 2008

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) has announced that TypeCon2008 will be held in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is home to the P22 type foundry, and is a city full of incredible architecture, the Roycrofters in the region, and a cultural renaissance suited to all appreciators of the fine arts, contemporary music, innovative architecture, and design.

St. Petersburg, Russia. September 2008
2008’s ATypI conference will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia, with the theme Civil Type. 2008 marks the 300th anniversary of Czar Peter the Great’s introduction of the Civil Type, a radical reform of the Cyrillic alphabet that laid the foundation for the forms of Russian and other Cyrillic writing and printing that we're familiar with today.

I suppose you can’t make this up. Police in Orange County, California are on the hunt for a bank robber they’ve dubbed the Wing-Ding bandit, so called due to the “font style in the robber's demand notes.” More discussion at typophile.

Franklin ITC released

First announced almost four years ago at ATypI Prague, the joint Font Bureau and ITC venture to reinvent ITC Franklin Gothic promised a 2005 release and 72 styles. Some time later ITC Franklin is the featured face on Typophile.com, and is available from ITC Fonts. Thanks to Adam for the correction and ITC link.
