We've asked the ATypI to clarify their position on free access to the Copenhagen conference by volunteer student helpers. We'll be reproducing their response once they get back to us.

15 January 2001 - Update

Sharon Irving, was kind enough to reply to our inquires following her Christmas vaction and ATypI 2002 planning trip to Rome.

Thanks for posting the comparative information. Price is a very very subjective issue and I have to say we receive very little price sensitivity here. Perhaps not surprising when you consider that the commercial rate for conferences these days is at least double what ATypI charges. (£600 per day is not unusual, £3/400 per day is very usual - very very much more than ATypI).

Regarding students:

ATypI is not designed to be a student event in the way for example that the ICOGRADA London seminar was. It is for the whole typographic community worldwide. Nevertheless, students are very welcome and indeed usually about 10% of the registered and paying delegates are of student status, often travelling vast distances (e.g. from Brazil) to attend. ATypI offers a substantially discounted rate for students (which incidentally barely covers the costs). We do ensure that everyone who claims student status can also prove that they are full-time registered students, in order to protect the benefit for those who are genuinely entitled to claim it. There may also be a few volunteer places available at a conference, restricted to people who are able to provide work for the conference in return for their free place. Anyone who wishes to volunteer should contact me here to discuss the possibilities.

* The fee for ATypI 1994 was provided by Laurence Penney, and was converted from US Dollars (USD) to British pounds sterling (GBP) at the 1 September 1994 exchange rate of 0.65.

** Fees for ATypI 1996 were kindly provided by Paul van der Laan, and were converted from Dutch guilders (NLG) to British pounds sterling (GBP) at the 1 July 1996 exchange rate of 0.38444.
