JY&A Fonts launches Koliba, an original new font family inspired by 1940s’ architects’ lettering
Typeface family by Jure Stojan features 2,800–3,300 kerning pairs per font and kerning support for Slovenian in Windows TrueType
Wellington, April 3 (JY&A Media) JY&A Fonts, the font software company known for its elegant, restrained typeface designs, has released JY Koliba, a new sans serif typeface family based around Slovenian architects’ lettering of the 1940s designed by Jure Stojan.
JY Koliba is the most comprehensive Adobe PostScript Type 1 and TrueType family released by JY&A Fonts, with a full eastern European character complement. Slovenian kerning, for Stojan’s mother tongue, has been built in to the Windows TrueType version. An OpenType version will be released later in 2001.
Despite the 1940s inspiration, JY Koliba is a creation of and for the 2000s, with 2,800 to 3,300 kerning pairs per font, and a modern, yet crafted appearance.
‘The design was inspired by various display alphabets,’ said Stojan, ‘as showcased on book covers designed in the 1940s by Slovenian architects.
‘The architectural drawing of that time was meticulously precise and well-organized, a tendency also reflected in lettering.’
‘This is one of the most elegant typeface families ever released at JY&A Fonts,’ said Jack Yan, CEO of Jack Yan & Associates, JY&A Fonts’ parent company. ‘With an art-déco, personal feel, balanced with structure, it will find favour with art directors and designers worldwide.’
JY Koliba is available in Ultra Light, Book and Bold weights, each with a true italic variant.
Samples can be viewed online at jyanet.com/fonts/font136.htm. A downloadable PDF may be obtained from that URL.
JY Koliba is available directly from JY&A Fonts and distributor, the Type Quarry, now, and will be sold through numerous JY&A Fonts channels including MyFonts.com, Typos and Precision Type. Each distributor has its own release schedule.
About JY&A Fonts
JY&A Fonts (jyanet.com/fonts) was founded in 1987, when Jack Yan started a design firm with an emphasis on lettering. His passion for hand-lettering for clients soon extended into type design, with the first JY&A typefaces emerging at the end of the 1980s. These were developed into PostScript and TrueType fonts in the 1990s with the release of Yan Series 333, a development of Yan’s own lettering style which is one of the more successful marriages of hand lettering and typography. It has been followed by similar fonts from other manufacturers.
JY&A Fonts became known for their elegance and restraint. Yan’s popular JY Integrity font followed in 1995, combining interesting and innovative ligatures. JY Ætna was a revival project launched the same year. Both had c. 2,800 kerning pairs in the text fonts, which cemented JY&A Fonts’ reputation for designing typefaces for the discerning user. The latest typefaces, JY Décennie and Décennie Express, were designed for web and print usage, while JY Comic Pro, designed by Antonio González de Santiago, shows that JY&A’s reputation for timelessness extends to fun and useful fonts as well. JY Koliba, from Slovenian designer Jure Stojan, adds a touch of the Mediterranean to the range.
Today, JY&A Fonts is as much a national brand in Australia and New Zealand as Linotype is in Europe. JY&A Fonts is a division of Jack Yan & Associates, a global communications firm which, in addition to typeface design, specializes in identities, brands, and venture incubation. JY&A also has a media division which publishes two titles, CAP (design, business, marketing strategy, and typography) and Lucire (the global fashion magazine).
