H. W. Caslon & Company Limited offers a digital type library drawn from a remarkable range of types historically stocked by the Caslon Foundry, founded in 1720 by England's greatest punch-cutter, William Caslon I. Founder's Caslon Old Face, launched in July 2001, includes 14 optically differentiated sizes of the classic type, and is the web's only complete Caslon, available online from http://www.hwcaslon.com.

The Company's approach to digital type has been based on a perception that whilst type digitisation has vastly extended the resources available to the typographer, the apparent freedom of choice has masked the disappearance of the best classic types. <--! H.W. Caslon & Company Limited offers a digital type library drawn from the remarkable range of types historically stocked by the Caslon Foundry, founded in 1720 by William Caslon I, England's greatest punch-cutter. The Founder's Caslon (TM) range includes Founder's Caslon Old Face (TM) in 15 optically differentiated sizes, Founder's Caslon Old Black (TM), and Founder's Caslon Egyptian (TM), the first sans serif type cut around 1813. In each instance, our digitisation has captured precisely the qualities in the letterpress type image which make them worth reviving in the first place.

The type library also includes meticulously authentic versions of other classic metal types, including Union Pearl, Figgins Shaded, and Fry's Canon, and the only accurate version of Edward Johnston's pioneering sans serif type of 1915/16, complete with alternative sorts and a wealth of ornaments.

The Company's approach to digital type has been based on a perception that whilst type digitisation has vastly extended the resources available to the typographer, this apparent freedom of choice has masked the disappearance of the best classic types.

A competitive digitisation service, using software developed in-house, is available to clients.

A comprehensive type specimen is currently in preparation: E-mail us for a copy. -->
