Future enhancements

The release version of WEFT will include performance enhancements and additional features to make the process of creating font objects even easier. We also expect future versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer to support more of the features proposed in the W3C's Web font embedding draft.

Improvements in Microsoft Internet Explorer

At present Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 will download, decompress and privately install font objects even if the real font is installed on a users system. Future versions will check if the real version of the font is available before downloading the linked font object. Currently this behavior has to be simulated using VBScript or JScript.

The W3C font embedding draft also describes the way in which browsers should be able to combine font objects containing different subsets of the same font. This way you could link to a font object which contains the uppercase letters from a particular font and another font object containing lowercase letters. At present Internet Explorer 4 will only use the first font object specified.

The release version of WEFT

Quick font object creation
The release version of WEFT will let you manually select fonts, pick subsets and create font objects without having to analyze Web pages.

Signing
The release version of WEFT will let Web page publishers digitally sign the font objects they create. This technology will tie font objects to their publisher.

Support for Type 1 fonts
The public preview version of WEFT works with TrueType fonts. The release version will also offer support for Type 1 fonts.

Support for fonts identified as 'status unknown'
The public preview version of WEFT won't let you use fonts that haven't been installed properly. It does this by checking the Windows registry against the actual font files stored on your hard disk. The release version will take control of this process.

Authoring tool support

Although WEFT is a useful post production tool, some designers will prefer to create font objects using traditional authoring tools such as Microsoft FrontPage. For this reason we are making the technology behind WEFT available to authoring tool developers. If you are an authoring tool developer and want to learn more about the technology please send mail to how to contact us.

Apple Macintosh support

Microsoft Internet Explorer for Apple Macintosh compatible machines will include support for font objects created using the Windows version of WEFT. At present we do not plan to convert WEFT to MacOS as the technology behind the tool will be made available to authoring tool developers, who will be free to build it into their Mac based tools.

Because WEFT is a post-production tool authors who prefer to use Mac based authoring tools can create their pages on this platform and run WEFT on the Windows machines they use for testing.
