Subset editor

Why edit subsets?

It's a good idea to modify subsets if you plan to make changes to a page and don't want to go to the trouble or reanalyzing and recreating font objects. Adding a few characters at this stage will save time and trouble later.

Editing subsets

On this screen for each font the characters identified by WEFT 2 are highlighted in black in a 'Used characters' window and listed as a string of characters in a 'Current subset' field.

dialog

There are several ways to modify a font subset.

  • Clicking on a character displayed in the 'Used characters' window will add or remove it from the subset. Characters included in the subset are displayed in black, those not included are displayed in gray.

  • Typing, cutting, pasting or deleting a character or characters from the 'Current subset' field.

  • Loading a Unicode or ASCII text file that defines a subset using the 'Load..' button.

  • By adjusting the global subsetting level from the 'Options' screen accessible through the 'Globals...' button.

If you edit a subset a star '*' will appear next to the characters column in the on the 'Fonts to embed'.

Options on this screen

Font and Style : You can select any of the font identified by WEFT 2 or any font that you've manually added using the 'Add...' button on the 'Fonts to embed' screen.

Language : this pull down menu let's you select any Unicode range supported by the font.

Note: WEFT 2 only lists a Unicode range if the font used claims to support it. Often you'll find fonts that don't report that they support a particular range if they only include a few characters from that range. However, you may need to use that specific character in your page.

Example : For a particular font you may want to include typographic quotes from the General punctuation Unicode range, but don't see this range listed. As a work around you can cut and paste the quotes from another application into the 'Current subset:' field on this screen. If you then toggle to another font and then back to the original one the General punctuation range will be listed under language.

Used characters window : For each font any character identified by WEFT 2 as having been used on an analyzed page will be included and displayed in black. Other characters will be displayed in gray. To add or remove characters from a subset just click on them. Changes are reflected in the 'Current subset' field. When you return to the 'Fonts to embed' screen any modified subsets will have a star '*' next to them.

Note: The space character for any identified font is always included in a subset. We also recommend that the question mark '?' is included for any font that uses characters from an obscure Unicode range.

Current subset : For each identified font this field will contain a string of characters reflecting character usage of the pages analyzed by WEFT 2. You can manually add, cut, paste or delete characters from this string. Changes are reflected in the 'Used characters window'.

Save... : This button lets you save the current subset string to a Unicode text file. Used in conjunction with the 'Load...' option you can create font objects for various fonts that contain the same subset.

Load... : This button lets you load a Unicode or ASCII text file which is used to define a character subset.

Globals... : Use this button to access the Weft 2 'Options' screen. From this screen you can adjust the global subsetting level. The various levels are explained on the 'Fonts to Embed' page.

Reset : For a selected font this button will reset a modified subset to the original subset identified by WEFT 2.

Okay : Returns to the 'Fonts to embed' screen. Changes are reflected in the 'Used fonts' window.

Cancel : Returns to the 'Fonts to embed' screen. Changes are discarded.
