Sending a speculative letter is never a waste of time! Between 60 and 70 per cent of jobs are not publicly advertised because there are enough good applicants who’ve already sent their CVs on the off-chance. Let companies know who you are and what you can do – you never know when you might be in the right place at the right time to land your perfect job!

When applying for a new job within your own company, the most common mistake is to under-sell yourself. Make sure you highlight your skills and strengths, just as if you were applying to a different company. In particular, your company knowledge and experience are highly prized skills (which can’t be easily replicated) and shouldn’t be underestimated. Show your employer that you have what it takes to move up a gear to the next level and achieve your dream promotion!
