Study says SAM compliance becoming too onerous

Fri, 03 Jul 2009

Study says SAM compliance becoming too onerous Companies which cut software costs internally rather than implementing Software Asset Management (SAM) standards may put their reputation and finances at risk by not complying, it has been claimed.

However, James Rowlands, chief executive at the independent technology efficiency and IT audit consultancy Liken, said businesses can reduce costs in the long-term by focusing on making their IT setup more efficient.

He was commenting after a survey conducted by Liken revealed that many senior IT professionals believe SAM standards have become too onerous and have switched their focus to delivering internal cost savings.

Some 58 per cent of respondents said they had now switched their primary focus away from adoption of the latest SAM standards.

Mr Rowlands said that while "there's always a risk" in not adhering to a formal SAM scheme, companies which focus on IT cost savings instead "end up leaner and therefore have less software to actually manage".

He explained that funding a business by internal cost cutting could "help finance the process of ensuring that they have compliance" and warned that all organisations should have these sort of controls in place whether they are following a formal program or not.

He stated: "You're only complaint if you actually see the scheme right the way through and do everything that's expected."
