BT broadband plan welcomed

BT's decision to press ahead with plans for a fibre optic broadband network is positive, it has been claimed.
The firm said it hopes to have 1.5 million homes hooked up to the next generation network by early summer 2010, as it announced the latest batch of destinations set to receive access.
Consequently, BT has now committed to spend £1.5 billion on this programme the UK's biggest single commercial investment in fibre broadband.
Michael Phillips, product director of BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said his firm welcomed the announcement from BT, although he said "the proof of the pudding will be in the speeds this is able to deliver".
He added that the UK is a service economy dependent upon firms' ability to be "more innovative and move more quickly" than their competitors.
Mr Phillips added: "It is vital that all Internet Service Providers and the government work towards delivering 100Mbps broadband speeds by 2012, to all major cities and conurbations."
Last month, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform unveiled the Digital Britain white paper, which sets out the importance of the digital economy to the UK's economic future and how it will drive future industrial capability and competitiveness.
It makes the case that the UK's communications infrastructure and increased digital participation are key to building a 21st century knowledge economy.
