Shutting computers down can save money
Tue, 13 Oct 2009
Businesses can reduce their outgoings by being more energy efficient, especially where their IT systems are concerned, it has been claimed.
A study conducted by Codework has revealed that the average cost of maintaining a 100-PC network approaches £4,500 a year in energy alone.
The fact that most PCs are left on for an average of 19 hours every day, despite only being used for nine hours, contributes to companies' bills, the firm claims.
According to Codework, by educating employees of the benefits of turning their computers off at the end of the day, the amount of money spent on electricity can be reduced.
The firm says that greener working practices, aligned with the use of energy saving software, can see bills cut by as much as 50 per cent.
Bhav Lakhani, the operations director at Codework, said: "This study shows that in the current economic climate, one of the most effective ways for companies to make significant savings is through reducing their energy costs."
Last week, Lee Coates, director of Ethical Investors Group, called for greater levels of investment in low carbon technology.
He said that although many firms recognise the benefits of green IT, few are taking affirmative steps to improve energy efficiency.
