Firms urged to commit to disaster recovery plans

Tue, 03 Nov 2009

Firms urged to commit to disaster recovery plans Business continuity planning should be considered an essential task for firms of all sizes, it has been claimed.

Mark Teter, chief technology officer at the Advanced Systems Group, commented that it is too late to take action once a disaster has occurred.

Writing for Computer Technology Review, he said companies need suitably skilled people in the right place, at the right time in the event of fire, flood, hardware failure, theft or other disaster.

Mr Teter added: "Business continuity planning is a serious enterprise business planning initiative on which the very survival of the organisation rides.

"Senior management and employees must be involved and committed to the plan."

He argued that although disaster recovery is an enterprise responsibility, it remains IT's role to make sure every business application has a viable disaster recovery plan in place.

Small business commentator Jennifer Walzer recently told the New York Times that many firms are continuing to operate without taking business continuity precautions.

Since many firms see the plan formation process as being tedious and time-consuming, they are taking risks which could jeopardise the future of their activities, she suggested.
