Buying Microsoft software
Here’s your guide to the basics of buying from us.
As a home user, you’ll normally buy Microsoft software:
| • | as boxed software with a CD ROM |
| • | pre-installed on a new PC, laptop, smartphone etc |
| • | direct from Microsoft Store (if you’re buying Microsoft Windows, Office or Expression) |
Buying software from us is like buying a music CD. You have the right to play the music, but you don’t “own” the music – the artist does. When you buy Microsoft software, you actually buy a licence that gives you the right to use the software.
Your licence sets out what you can - and can’t - do with the software. For example, can you transfer the software to another PC or laptop, or run it on more than one machine at the same time?
Your licence agreement
If you ever need to check the “rules” for using your software, you can look them up in the Software Licence Terms. Your can see your licence terms on screen when you install software or set up your PC. You will always have to accept these terms and conditions before you can use your software. Pre-installed software usually has a few more restrictions than boxed software (because in general it’s cheaper). If you’re not sure what your licence lets you do, then read the licence terms or call our customer service line on 0870 60 10 100. If you can’t easily find your Software Licence Terms, you can look up boxed software terms and conditions here. To find licence terms for pre-installed software, run a search for “software licence terms” or “EULA” on your machine, or contact your retailer.
Did you know?
| • | Pre-installed software can’t be transferred to a new machine. If you have pre-installed software on your current PC and you buy a new one, you’ll need to buy new software for it too. This is true for operating systems (such as Microsoft Windows) as well as applications (like Microsoft Office). You can transfer boxed software, but only a limited number of times. |
| • | Licences for pre-installed software only let you run your software on one machine. |
| • | Microsoft Office boxed software licences let you install a second copy of Office on a mobile device that is just for your use. |
(There are a very small number of exceptions to these rules. Always refer to your licence terms to be absolutely sure.)
