Is your software legit?

Are you're worried your software isn't genuine? Fake and illegal software can put you at risk from identity theft and damaging viruses, so it's always best to be sure you have the real thing. There are a few ways to put your mind at rest:

  • You can run a machine check on Microsoft Windows® and Office® programs by visiting this site and clicking on the "Validate" option at the top
  • You can visit our how to tell site which is full of useful tips for spotting dodgy fakes
  • You can email us at ukpiracy@microsoft.com

If you have activated your software without any problems, and have never had a pop-up notice telling you that your software might be fake, there is another option you might want to try. You can send your software in to the UK piracy team and we can check it for you. Find out more about this service.

What to do if your software turns out to be fake or illegal

If you find out your software is dodgy via the machine check option then your best bet is to follow the instructions you are given at that point (as part of our Windows Genuine Advantage and Office Genuine Advantage programmes).

Otherwise…

If your software came pre-installed on your laptop or PC, ask whoever sold it to you for a genuine/legal program or your money back. If this doesn't work, contact your local Trading Standards.

Another option if you find you have pre-installed fake or unlicensed software is the Get Genuine Kit. This is available for Windows 7 and Windows Vista or for Windows XP Professional.

If you bought boxed software, go back to the shop you got it from and ask them to confirm you have a legal program. If they can't, ask for a genuine copy or your money back. If this doesn't work, call our customer helpline on 0844 800 2400.
