What is Software Asset Management?
Software Asset management (SAM) is defined by the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) as: all of the infrastructure and processes necessary for the effective
management, control and protection of the software assets within an organisation throughout all the stages of their lifecycle.
Help your customers gain control of software assets throughout the software management life cycle, from procurement through deployment to retirement.
By providing services that help customers implement software asset management (SAM), you can increase your services revenue potential and strengthen customer
relationships.
Siezing the SAM opportunity for your business
Understanding Software Asset Management and Microsoft
Microsoft conducts SAM engagements in two ways, either via the Microsoft SAM team and with a partner or through the Microsoft SAM programme, which is
led by the partner. The type of engagement normally depends upon the scale of need and complexity at the customer end and whether or not the customer has
proactively chosen to engage in a SAM review.
Qualified Microsoft SAM partners are used to conduct these reviews. These partners are experienced in licensing and Software Asset Management and hold
the required Microsoft MCP's to enable them to support our customers through the engagement.
The Microsoft SAM Programme
This programme was developed specifically for Microsoft customers by the UK Microsoft SAM team and launched in 2007. This self start programme is
managed solely by the partner, with little or no engagement from the Microsoft SAM team, other than reviewing key outputs such as the effective licence position
document. This is a customer centric model and is a great way for a customer to proactively engage in software asset management. Microsoft is the only vendor in
the UK to currently offer a programme like this. By enrolling in the programme, the customer also benefits from free, specialist classroom based training and a
free SAM consultancy session with a Microsoft SAM partner. Following the review process, Microsoft provides the customer with a certificate, stating they have
completed the SAM programme and certifies their licence position for 12 months. Customers typically enrol in the programme every 12 months.
The SAM Programme is delivered solely by qualified Microsoft SAM partners, benefits of becoming a SAM Programme partner include -
• Access to classroom training on product identification, proof of licence
• How to read and understand a Microsoft License Statement (MLS)
• How to create a Microsoft Effective Licence Position (ELP)
• Access to the SAM partner community webinars, newsletters and events in the UK
• SAM Optimisation model assessment training
A Microsoft SAM partner or SAM Programme partner, must hold at least 2 SAM MCP's within their organisation.
