“Spice World Voted Worst Film Ever Made”

MSN Movies reveals the UK’s most unpopular films

Reading - 18th January, 2007- What do Spice World, Titanic and Grease 2 all have in common? All three films give viewers an uncontrollable urge to weep into their popcorn, hide behind the sofa in horror or simply turn them straight off, according to a poll of 12,000 Brits by MSN Movies, which reveals the top twenty film flops that Brits just love to hate.

The 1997 movie Spice World topped the survey of worst films ever made, according to almost 1 in 5 (17%) of those questioned on the MSN Movies site, closely followed by a surprise entry for multi Oscar-winning Titanic – the highest grossing movie of all time. Grease II (1982) proves to be a sequel too far, coming in third place on the list, although Michelle Pfeiffer’s early appearance in this teen turkey doesn’t seem to have harmed her career.  Her performance as Catwoman in Batman Returns is safe from criticism whilst Halle Berry’s 2004 take on the same character in Catwoman claws its way into the chart at number 9.

Other unwatchable films to be named and shamed by movie fans include Batman and Robin (7), starring George Clooney and his catastrophic codpiece, and House of Wax (13) starring society scarlet Paris Hilton, whose acting is as animated as the wax works she stumbles upon. Surprisingly, the list also contains Eli Roth’s gore fest Hostel (5) and cult B-movie Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (12).

Don’t give up your day job

With Spice Girls the Movie as the number one most hated movie, and no fewer that four “pop star movies” in the top twenty, it seems that Brits hold a special disdain for films starring singers who turn their talents to acting. Nineties “rap” star Vanilla Ice is scorned for the upsettingly bad Cool as Ice (14); legendary diva Mariah Carey suffers for embarrassing glory wagon Glitter (17), and pop queen Britney Spears is slammed for the clichéd teen flick Crossroads (15).

Even diva J-Lo fails to ‘glow’ with two failed films in the top 20 –Anaconda (6) and Gigli (8). Perhaps she should stick to producing songs and scents instead?
