The 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review (CSRO7) issued by HM Treasury in October has set the challenge for substantial further efficiency savings to be made across government operations. Departmental plans are yet to be published but, within an overall rise in spending from £340bn to £397bn, departments will be expected to find a further £30bn in efficiency savings by 2010.
