Once upon a time, running and marketing your own business was easy. You would network, ask for referrals by word of mouth, or place adverts in the trusty Yellow pages. Now marketing for SMEs is just not that simple! Most of your potential clients will look to the Internet to find the best provider of services. There’s a minefield of factors to think about; getting a website built, making sure it’s found, deciding if advertising is cost-effective, building links to and from other websites, the list goes on and on.

In the current day and age all your clients will expect you to have a website. It is an extension of your business card, a place to prove your service quality and credibility, a place to put your latest news events and new products and a place for customers to feedback on how you are doing. That may be all very well, but do you always have to pay an arm and a leg to a web developer? In the existing economic climate this is not the most attractive option; so if you are a small company and want a low cost website, quickly and within your control, do it yourself!

One way to get visibility on the internet is through local listings; it’s cost effective, targeted and means your company gets rapid internet presence in a local area. The downside is that there is restriction to a geographical area, as they are quantified by the postcode added. Another downside is that it isn’t a full website.

For a full website solution there are some great easy to use design and build platforms such as Microsoft Office Live. It’s free, easy to use and walks you through the choice of either a free .officelive domain or a purchased domain. It also offers email accounts, hosting and can be optimised for search engines in the same way a bespoke built website is.
