Cloud computing potential for growing firms

Tue, 30 Jun 2009

Cloud computing potential for growing firms Cloud computers can appeal to individual users and not merely large businesses, it has been claimed.

According to David Pratt, chief operating officer at ThinkGrid, the main use of the servers for the individual is for storing music and photo sharing, but small companies can also gain access to IT software which may otherwise be beyond their means.

Mr Pratt noted that cloud computing providers can assign different permissions of access, allowing people to gain instant access to particular files or programmes.

He added: "Whether it is personal or business, it is increasingly about the sharing of that knowledge and that data and making sure that you can do that in a nice and easy and seamless way."

The International Data Corporation (IDC) report IDC Predictions 2009: An Economic Pressure Cooker Will Accelerate the IT Industry Transformation, recently predicted that the IT industry's expansion to the cloud will accelerate over the next year.

It claimed that the economic downturn will lead to more businesses using the facility in a bid to reduce costs.

IDC said that while IT cloud services offerings — including Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), cloud server capacity, cloud storage and so forth — will slow in growth, they will slow by a smaller amount than their traditional IT alternatives during 2009.
