Expert says support needed for IT business growth
Mon, 02 Nov 2009
It is vital that the UK economy supports small enterprises looking to expand, according to one commentator.
Carrie Hartnell, head of industry strategy at the IT industry association Intellect, said the UK is blessed with a significant number of small innovative companies, particularly in the technology sector.
However, she suggested that there is then a gap in the market between them and the large, primarily foreign-owned firms which generate the majority of IT revenue.
Ms Hartnell claimed that the UK is "seizing the innovative and entrepreneurial environment", with support available for IT professionals wishing to establish new firms.
However, she said the whole UK ecosystem needs supporting, allowing small companies to develop, grow and then remain sustainable rather than simply selling up to larger rivals or remaining at the size they are.
"The smaller companies basically form a foundation for the technology industry in the UK," Ms Hartnell said.
"So, for us, for the UK, [it is important that] that environment is there to both grow and nurture small companies and, also, the kind of environment you get with the larger companies, [which] will then help them."
According to Booz & Company, eight out of the IT sector's top ten research and development spenders increased their investment last year.
