Home business sector open to new entrants

The faltering economy may have provided the perfect opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to start home-based businesses, it has been claimed.
According to Deborah Maroney, chief executive of the DeMar Group, widespread internet access is opening the world of business up to new entrants and now could be the best time to establish a web-based enterprise.
She commented that many online firms involve affiliate marketing, an industry segment which continues to expand despite the downturn.
"Large companies recognise the power of the internet and now ordinary people can get their piece of this growing pie," she added.
Ms Maroney suggested that anyone wishing to establish this type of firm should conduct research on the marketplace, but noted that opportunities do exist for those brave enough to take the plunge.
Earlier this week, George Derbyshire, chief executive of the national enterprise network NFEA, claimed that many people who have been made redundant during the recession are choosing to establish their own home-based firms rather than return to paid employment.
He stated: "[Home working] does have its advantages, and there are lots of other people doing it as well. This is a time when many people are seeing that there are opportunities to start their own business."
