Mobile technology allows control from abroad

Mon, 09 Feb 2009

Mobile technology allows control form abroad Business owners can keep on top of company affairs using wi-fi on mobile devices like laptops and mobile phones, it has been suggested.

According to Alison Couper, Expedia communications director, the internet is increasingly regarded as "an integral tool in the fabric of modern living".

She says it is important for people to be connected irrespective of their location, as it is often necessary to check work emails or make further bookings.

Ms Couper adds: "More and more, people are using wi-fi as a means of connecting to the internet because they're taking laptops and internet-enabled mobile phones abroad with them rather than relying on traditional desktop computers."

Continuing, she notes that it is important to be aware of the cost of connecting to a wireless network before travelling, whether it is at airports, cafes and hotels.

Planning ahead and calling hotels to find out how much they charge is advisable, she says.

Research conducted by Expedia indicates that hotels with a lower star rating are more likely to offer free wi-fi access than international or five star hotels.

The firm commented that 18 per cent of travellers are willing to downgrade their hotel star rating to safeguard their travel plans this year.
