Smart meters can help small firms reduce energy bills
Fri, 30 Oct 2009
Businesses will be able to monitor their energy use using a new Google smart meter, it has been reported.
Google PowerMeter is a free software tool that provides consumers with information on their energy consumption, with a view to them reducing costs.
The software receives information from utility smart meters and on-site energy management devices and visualises this information on a personalised iGoogle homepage.
Commenting on the development, Peter Jenkins, head of communications and public affairs at the Energy Retail Association, said smart meters will revolutionise the way customers think about and pay for their energy.
"For the first time they will be able to see how much energy they use in real time, and to look at their energy use today and compare it with what they used the day before, week before, month before and even the year before," he commented.
"Customers will be able to see where they can make changes to their behaviour in order to save energy, and save money."
Mr Jenkins claimed that the major energy firms are supporting the national roll-out of smart technology, but the government needs to provide clarity on its delivery plan.
Earlier this month, the Citizens Advice Bureau claimed that by switching energy provider, many consumers and businesses can reduce their electricity and gas bills.
