Successful entrepreneurs need to leave the mentality of being an employee behind, it has been suggested.
Writing for the All Business blog, Frank Ross said the majority of people who start a business from have worked for another company in the past and are used to carrying out delegated duties.
He commented that employees are told when they are to start and finish work, when they can take their lunch hour and what tasks they carry out during the day.
However, Mr Ross said all this structure disappears when the decision to found a new enterprise is made.
"With a home-based business, you must be self-directed. Unless you are able to be self-directed, your home business won't go anywhere," he noted.
"Directing your own time and business activities will require a great deal of discipline on your part."
Dr Rebecca Harding, co-founder and managing director of Delta Economics, recently claimed that working for yourself is "something that helps people fulfil their dreams".
She stated self-employment can be "a liberation" for people if they are self-starters and able to manage the process of motivating themselves.
Having this type of autonomy can be a huge motivator for individuals to succeed in business, Dr Harding added.
