StaffShare aims to sustain UK jobs through recession

A new scheme has been launched to help both struggling employers and staff members survive the recession.
Work Wise UK has organised StaffShare, which is designed to help employers lower wage costs by facilitating a shorter working week, while not impacting upon the earnings of their employees.
The scheme works by finding temporary part-time placements for employees with other businesses which need their specialist skills, but also do not want to hire on a permanent basis.
Employees are required to register their details through their firm's human resources department, allowing their services to be advertised on a database accessible to interested companies.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive of WorkwiseUK.org, said many companies in the private sector have got staff that are under-utilised.
"If individuals want to put themselves on StaffShare, there are organisations out there, particularly in the third sector, the charitable sector, who during the summer months are very willing to take these people on a short term assignment."
According to latest statistics published by the Office for National Statistics, the number of unemployed people in the UK has risen to 2.26 million.
The jobless rate was 7.2 per cent for the three months to April 2009, up 0.7 over the previous quarter and up 1.9 over the year.
