Microsoft and UNHCR have been working together since 1999 under UNHCR's mandate and Microsoft Unlimited Potential to apply creative technology solutions in support of efficient refugee protection and assistance programs and to provide enhanced educational opportunities for refugees.
UNHCR and Microsoft joint work includes:
The development of ProGres, a standardized software system to support refugee registration. ProGres currently operates in 308 refugees camps across 58 countries
Collaboration in UNHCR’s Council of Business Leaders, which is composed of key private sector partners of UNHCR who meet to raise funds for refugees from the private sector
Launch of the Community Technology Access program to bring computers and internet access to camps, helping refugees access education opportunities and skills training
On June 20, festivities around the world remind us that refugees are human beings with rights that call for recognition and, above all, protection. Microsoft is also helping to raise awareness on World Refugee Day via by supporting the UNHCR's "Gimme Shelter" campaign.
