I'm reminded of that vid they did to Novell.
Anyway, the virtualization war is really just starting. And its fun to read all the mud slinging. But there are times when I get informed by it.
Right now, M$ Hyper-V is a contender. But it isn't something that would knock-out VMWare in the following months.
I actually like VMWare ever since I got to know about it when working for TrendMicro. I like Hyper-V's concept too right now. Each camp seems to have valid points. But what's important is what customers want - reliable, performant, secure, manageable.
Give that, better that then you win.
Just my 2 cents.

I'd love to see MS Engineers supporting Red Hat, SCO Unix, Free BSD, Solaris and Netware on Hyper-V VMs ... Just to name a few.
Hopefully in the future they will probably match Virtual Infrastructure features ... but how long is going to take to match Vsphere's features?
Let's keep waiting for future features to come!!

As a long time MS advocate, its sad to see this rubbish being produced for a product Im quite sure will one day become a serious contender in the enterprise virtualisation space.  And @Grand11 - given the right SATA controller ($20 ebay special) and old cast off Intel Pro network im running ESXi just fine on a commodity box (and I love memory over-commit ;) )

Microsoft show how far behind VMware they are, both in technology and thinking.  Are Cisco making the Nexus 1000V switch for Hyper-V? no.....
It wasn't so long ago that Microsoft said Live Migration wasn't required, for planned maintenance you could use cold migration.  You have a long way to catch up....

Guys, When are you going to sell Cars ! Our auto-industry needs some great salesmen ! Just realized all of them are in Microsoft now.

You can run ESX 3.5 and ESXi in Workstation 6.

God is in the detail.
w/ Humor, wow! but thanks for the deep tech dig. The talk & blogs are obviating the complexity next to nothing:) user wins! Maybe I may write a live animation/simulator for virtualization in xaml/wpf/drivers/visio/intellisense/c++ for class project. Thanks to these ease of use lowcost tools working together from MSFT. Strousub "..why are MSFT tools so popular..?" Maybe its the integration, and smooth out corners, the details, devil!

The only valid arguement on this list is the one of device drivers.  It's a real pain to not be able to fire up esxi on my home computer that I use as a dev environment yet have no problems using Hyper-V core.
I get the impression that VMware is in the same boat of every OS that used to try to compete with Windows in the older desktop wars:  it's not that they have to write all the drivers ... it's that they are the only ones who are willing to do it because there's simply no money in it.  They are just spinning it in a way that they want to guarantee stability.
Seriously they need to open up thier driver model.  That and thier 2TB direct driver limitation in the storage controller are thier two biggest problems right now IMO (MS has an honest advantage with GPT and huge disk sizes).

It is actually a good thing that VMware adepts begin to respond so strongly on a funny response to the socalled VMware myths. Stronger responses usually translated into a growing fear for the competition. In the end the user will be the clear winner from the increasing hypervisor competition. In my opinion Microsoft will win this battle anyway :-)
I am working for a Microsoft Gold Partner selling both Hyper-V and VMware. We have a growing number of Hyper-V customers who love the product and the potential with R2 which is just around the corner.

@John Gilham - VMware Marketing. That's actually quite funny given that the MS virtualization blog is crypto viral-marketing. Allow me to make my credentials known. I'm independent, freelance Microsoft Certified Instructor, Citrix Instructor and VMware Instructor. I was started with virtualization in 2003 with VMware, when my friends at Microsoft Reading UK were telling me that virtualization was no big deal, and it would just be handy way of extending the lifetime of Windows NT. I'm equally critical of VMware on my blog, books and guides - and with my students. You see people value an honest, unbiased opinon. The problem with this video is that's being watch by people with 10+ years of racking up x86 boxes. We expect better than this... correction, we deserve better than this.

The scrolling text at the end reads ‘Microsoft Virtualization is built-in the platform!’
I think you’re missing a ‘to’.

Wow, if this is the Microsoft Virtualization Strategy team, the Microsoft Partners should be worried because Microsoft just doesn't get it.  As a long time Gold Partner, I find the embarassing. Come on guys, if you are going to release something like this, at least wait until you have a real released solution. You're 10 years too late and hundreds of features short.  I'll start to consider taking this Virtualization Strategy team serious in 3 to 5 years if they can release a solution that can stand on its own without this kind of comic routine.

Shame on you by doing this amateur video !
No best word to describe it: FUD
sulan (235 days ago)

Come on! This is soo pathetic!
Of course you don't have stuff like Live Migration and such. Sure, you will have it in the future, but right now you don't, and that is the current truth.

If you like to run your business critical environment on a not-yet-existing, unproven environment that relies on the stability of a generic Windows OS with several 3rd party drivers, then go for it!

From what i read.. Live Migration is already in beta and available.. So is cluster Share Volume..
So basically Microsoft will give Live Migration and Cluster Share volume as part of Windows Server Hyper- V...
SO WHY should I pay for VMW?
ALso.. i looked at Microsoft WebSite.. So many Enterprise CUSTOMERS case studies...
If soooo many customers are using it there might be something to this..
MicroSerf (236 days ago)

JohnG asks valid questions. My original msg is cryptic. Here's my prob... This video confuses my customers - I've already positioned Hyper-V as a 1.0 product which seems promising.
a) Quick migration requires that you shut down your VM. That's bad. But, we can use maintenance windows.
Live migration is critical for production.
b) Footprint: well, video says that you shouldn't compare kernel footprint, but rather memory. Silly. This is bait/switch... Rather, patching a big kernel means... well monthly patch Tuesday (and downtime).
c)SCVMM simply doesn't manage my VMware VM's...  even for my mixed mode customers, I tell them to ignore SCVMM for managing VMware stuff - e.g. it doesn't even clone from template!  Even VirtualCenter web access has more functionality.
d) Memory overcommit. For production users, this is a HUGE deal - *IF* used properly. Don't architect for more phys memory than you need for boot up - otherwise you swap. Ugh! I get way more VM

Just for balance, VMWare get it wrong too,

Maybe we need to talk to the discovery boys

Responding to MicroSerf from another MS partner:
1. Today Microsft does have a live migration feature, it's called quick migration.  You get failover in 20 seconds instead 5.  Unless you need the 15 seconds, you don't waste the money on VMware.  Windows 2008 R2 WILL Have 5 second live migration with shared volumes.
2. What does the footprint have to do with it. Worse VMware performance:
virtualizationreview.com/.../article.aspx
3. SCVMM will manage VMWare servers and migrate from them to Hyper-V.  I would not use it manage your VMware environment.
For all the commenters mocking their appearance or commenting it as FUD without a real comment...do you work for VMWare marketing?
Harvard Yards (236 days ago)

Great job.  As a VMWARE customer I will be moving to Hyper-V.  After all we already own it and the VMWARE reps result too mud slinging to try to keep our business.  How unprofessional of them.  My only advice is to the guy on the right.  Stop eating so many egg rolls man!
mtstepha (236 days ago)

Guys are you serious? This was painful, along the lines of your earlier, equally amateur vmwarecostswaytoomuch.com  - how about focusing on the product instead of this smug video full of half truths - like having live migration available
munrpa (236 days ago)

munrpa
Guys how can you expect to be taken seriously producing drivel like this.
Cringworthy.
MicroSerf (236 days ago)

My VAR business is fully baked in MSFT success.  So, I'm looking forward to a day when MSFT can compete with XEN and VMWare.  That said, this video is hogwash!  It's embarrassing.  Quit producing this kind of stuff. you're slowing my sales cycle!  Examples of terrible answers:
1. We don't have live migration.
"Not true, we've heard of it, and will have it in 2010. All we had to do was rewrite the file system."
2. ESXi has a much smaller footprint.
"That's unfair, ESX is 'almost like windows' because it has a large memory size."  WHAT?? does that have to do with footprint.
3. SCVMM doesn't really manage VMware infrastructure.
"That's silly, because... oh, look can we talk about MOM, instead?"
Look, I could go on and on. This is video really not helpful, except to highlight VMWare strengths.
guy (236 days ago)

So you are busting the myths of not having a VMotion/VMFS equivalent by stating your next product will have them.  When is that expected out again...2010?  I love that the status quo went from "live migrating servers is not needed":
blogs.technet.com/.../For-_2400_50_2C00_000_2C00_-I-could-pay-someone-to-move-my-virtual-machines-for-me.aspx
to now pushing their live migration/cluster file system as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Why does the guy on the right look like you is reading off of a prompter? and what is to his left that he keeps glancing over at?
Mr RTFM (236 days ago)

Yup. FUD. The 3 layers bit was funny...
